Build Spotlight: 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon — Project Red Thunder

Every once in a while, a build comes through our shop that reminds us exactly why we do what we do. Project Red Thunder — a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon build — is one of those builds. The owner came to Redline Auto Creations with a clear vision: a Rubicon that could dominate trails, turn heads on the street, and deliver a premium audio experience while doing both. What started as a stock Rubicon left our Tampa shop as one of the most complete Jeep Wrangler Rubicon builds we have ever produced.

This is the story of how we brought Project Red Thunder to life.

The Owner's Vision

The owner of this Rubicon was not interested in half measures. He had spent years wheeling a mildly modified JK and wanted his new JL Rubicon to be the last Jeep he would ever need to build. The brief was ambitious: go big on tires, keep it trail-capable with a suspension system that could handle serious articulation, add lighting for night runs, install a competition-grade audio system, and tie everything together with exterior details that matched the Jeep's factory Firecracker Red paint.

We sat down for an in-depth consultation and mapped out every component, every modification, and every potential conflict before turning a single wrench. That upfront planning is what separates a build that works from one that creates problems down the road. here

Suspension: Building the Foundation

The foundation of any serious Jeep build is the suspension, and Project Red Thunder required a system capable of clearing 42-inch tires while maintaining street manners and trail performance.

We installed a long-arm suspension system with adjustable control arms that gave us the ability to fine-tune the geometry for the increased ride height. The kit included heavy-duty track bars front and rear, extended brake lines, and high-angle CV driveshafts to handle the steeper operating angles.

The shock absorbers were remote-reservoir units with adjustable compression and rebound damping. This allowed us to dial in a comfortable highway ride without sacrificing the slow-speed compliance needed for rock crawling. The front and rear sway bars were upgraded to quick-disconnect units, letting the owner unhook them on the trail for maximum articulation and reconnect them for highway stability.

We also addressed the often-overlooked steering components. A heavy-duty drag link and tie rod assembly replaced the factory units, which would not have survived the forces generated by 42-inch tires on the trail. The steering stabilizer was upgraded to a dual-stabilizer setup to eliminate bump steer and death wobble potential.

Wheels and 42-Inch Tires: Making a Statement

Running 42-inch tires on a Jeep Wrangler is not a bolt-on proposition. It requires careful component selection and significant modification to make everything work without binding, rubbing, or premature wear.

We selected beadlock-capable wheels in a 17-inch diameter with a width and backspacing calculated specifically for the 42-inch tire size. The matte black finish with red accent hardware complemented the Firecracker Red exterior and gave the Jeep an aggressive, purposeful look.

The 42-inch mud-terrain tires provided an enormous contact patch and ground clearance that put this Rubicon in a class well above the typical trail Jeep. To make them fit at full steering lock and full suspension compression, we performed precision fender trimming, relocated the front bump stops, and adjusted the suspension geometry to optimize the operating range.

The axles were regeared to restore the power delivery that the larger tire diameter steals from the stock gearing. This ensured the Jeep still accelerated confidently on the highway and could crawl at extremely low speeds on the trail without overworking the transmission. here

LED Lighting: Owning the Night

Project Red Thunder was designed to be as capable at night as it is during the day. The lighting package was extensive and carefully planned to provide coverage in every direction without blinding oncoming traffic during road use.

The centerpiece is a curved LED light bar mounted on the windshield frame, producing a massive flood of light for high-speed desert running and trail navigation. We paired it with a set of auxiliary LED pods mounted on the A-pillars for focused spot-beam coverage and additional LED pods integrated into the front bumper for close-range fill light during slow-speed crawling.

Rear-facing LED lights were mounted on the spare tire carrier and the rear crossmember to illuminate the area behind the Jeep during recovery operations or campsite setup. Rock lights in red (matching the build's theme) were installed under the body to illuminate the terrain immediately around the tires during night wheeling.

Every light was wired through a relay system with an auxiliary switch panel mounted on the overhead console, giving the driver independent control of each lighting zone. The wiring was routed through weatherproof connectors and loom, because a Jeep with its top down in a Florida thunderstorm is a when, not an if. here

Custom Audio System: Sound That Hits

The owner was clear that he wanted a sound system that could overcome wind noise with the top off and doors removed at highway speeds. This is one of the toughest audio environments you can build for, and it required a system with significant power and carefully chosen speaker placements.

We installed a marine-grade head unit with Bluetooth streaming and a waterproof face. The front sound stage consisted of component speakers in custom-fabricated pods mounted in the dash and kick panels, powered by a dedicated multi-channel amplifier tucked under the rear seat. A pair of coaxial speakers were mounted in the rear sound bar for fill.

The low end came from a compact powered subwoofer enclosure custom-built to fit in the limited cargo area without sacrificing usable space. The enclosure was sealed and reinforced to prevent rattles at high output levels.

All audio wiring was run with weatherproof connections and marine-grade components throughout. The system was tuned with a DSP (digital signal processor) to compensate for the acoustic challenges of an open-air vehicle, delivering clear, powerful sound whether the top was up or down. here

Exterior Enhancements: The Details That Define It

The exterior modifications on Project Red Thunder went beyond function into the realm of craftsmanship. Every addition was chosen to complement the Firecracker Red paint and the aggressive stance created by the lift and 42-inch tires.

A heavy-duty front bumper replaced the factory unit, providing winch mounting capability, D-ring recovery points, and integrated light mounts. The bumper was finished in textured black with red accent panels that matched the factory paint — a detail we handled with precision paint matching to ensure a seamless color match. here

The rear bumper was similarly upgraded with a swing-out spare tire carrier rated for the weight of the 42-inch spare, integrated recovery points, and a high-clearance design that improved the departure angle for trail obstacles.

Steel tube fenders replaced the factory plastic units, providing the additional clearance needed for the oversized tires while protecting the body from trail debris. Inner fender liners in aluminum kept mud and water out of the engine bay.

A snorkel system raised the air intake to roof level, protecting the engine from water ingestion during deep water crossings. Armor plating underneath protected the oil pan, transmission, and transfer case from rock impacts.

The Numbers

  • Suspension lift: Long-arm system with remote-reservoir adjustable shocks
  • Tires: 42-inch mud-terrain on 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels
  • Axle regear: Optimized ratio for 42-inch tire diameter
  • Lighting: LED light bar, six auxiliary LED pods, rock lights
  • Audio: Marine-grade head unit, component front stage, rear fill, custom subwoofer, multi-channel amplifier, DSP tuning
  • Armor: Front bumper with winch mount, rear bumper with swing-out carrier, steel tube fenders, skid plates
  • Exterior: Paint-matched accent panels, snorkel, aluminum inner fenders

The Result

Project Red Thunder left Redline Auto Creations as a purpose-built machine that can handle anything its owner points it at. The suspension delivers composed highway cruising and confident trail performance. The 42-inch tires clear obstacles that would stop most builds. The lighting turns night into day. And the audio system delivers concert-level sound even with the top down on I-275.

This build is one of over 61 full vehicle builds we have completed at Redline, and it represents the level of planning, execution, and craftsmanship that goes into every project we take on.
